绵羊
绵羊（Sheep），是一种长有卷曲体毛的羊属哺乳动物。早在第一纪元，伊甸人就已经进行着牧羊活动，马锐赫家族进入贝烈瑞安德时，跟随他们迁徙的家畜中有少量绵羊。[1]绵羊在努门诺尔岛的埃梅瑞依地区十分常见，女王安卡理梅年幼时曾生活于当地的牧羊场附近，因此对绵羊怀有特殊的感情。[2]第三纪元期间，绵羊在埃利阿多和安都因河谷等地均有饲养。[3][4]
名称与别名
昆雅语中的“绵羊”一词是máma，来源于原始昆迪语中的māmā。[5][6] 它的通用埃尔达语名称是mbā。[7]
在托尔金早期设定的诺姆语（通常认为是辛达语的前身）中，moth意为“绵羊”（复数形式为mothrim或mothin）。Iol意为“羔羊”，iolinc进一步强调其年幼（“小羊羔”）。[8]
